EP Review: Shy Of The Depth

Four[EP: Shy Of The Depth]
[Label: Basick Records]

Although a relatively new band, Brighton based Shy Of The Depth have had a few breaks on the tour front, having supported titans Meshuggah and thrashers Malefice amongst notable others this year. And with such reputable headline bands, it seems that this influence has been put to good use. This confident EP is packed full of complicated riffs and polyrhythms that should get any progressive/experimental metal fan interested.

The guitar tone that features during the deep stop/start riffs on first track ‘Frozen Still Flows’ has a sniff of Meshuggah to it, though the time signatures are no way near as complicated, and eventually the track drifts towards galloping metalcore and heavy breaks—riff follows riff after riff. The vocals are split between whispering atmospherics and Eddie’s rasping voice.

‘Worth Is Wealth’ is a different and refreshing track altogether. The guitar tone seems to have changed; the bass can be heard in the back, slapping and popping away and playing intricate bass lines that fill the right places. It’s no wonder that Justin Hill and Dan Weller (formerly of Sikth) cherry-picked the band and invited them to record the EP at their studio—they must have heard themselves in not only this track, but in the whole band.

With the fade out of ‘Unborn Menace’ enters the final stomping metal track of ‘Bastard Approach’. This is more of a heavy palm muted progressive riffing and is superbly executed by the band. Even with just four tracks, the band show a great deal of versatility which will undoubtedly be explored in future releases in order for them to create a unique style of their own.
