EP Review: Green Eyed Child

THREE[EP: Silence (Speak Your Mind)]
[Label: Unsigned]

If you read the mainstream influences that Green Eyed Child list on their MySpace (Foo Fighters, Stereophonics, Paul Weller, Manic Street Preachers) before listening to them you’d think that the four boys from Billericay were just a quartet of noisome oiks simply penning rock-by-numbers tunes. The truth, however, is something much more exciting.

The four tracks here certainly differ in quality with the final one horribly chopped off in it’s prime (an obvious error when copying the tracks for distribution). ‘Intro’ will simply make your jaw drop. A huge thumping bass drum is joined by interweaving guitars, rich in warped sustain and firing off a sucker, spiralling riff. They lead into the brilliance of the title-track and it’s bustling Black Crowes-esque bluesy low-end. The vocals starkly cut in with a delivery and tone that’s somewhere between Stereophonics’ drawl and an Oasis of gloomy flippancy. The lead guitar at the end perfectly squares off a track I could pretty much stick on repeat and not tire of.

‘Victim’ is a more upbeat, slightly simplistic but nicely constructed no-frills rock stomper. It does tend to hit each predictable mark it can, but benefits from being kept short and sweet and to the point. ‘Gazing’ lacks punch and precision. The vocal comes across as slightly whiny here and the guitars and bass follow each other around the song too much. The result is a track that feels slightly laborious.

With half the EP hitting home I reckon the band should be rightly proud of what they’ve achieved so far and I, for one, will be checking their live material out the next time they roll around; hopefully with a stack of new songs to show off.
