Demo Review: This Is My Honesty

FOUR[Region: Cambs]
[Label: Unsigned]

I can’t help but feel a little bit sorry for Cambridge-based This Is My Honesty. A different country, a better climate, a more relaxed attitude to life and these guys could be superstars. Unfortunately it’s the UK, it’s pissing down in the middle of summer and everyone is fucking miserable. Luckily for us though nobody seemed to mention this to TIMH.

All the tracks here are sugar-coated; hook-laden pop-punk rock gems with every chorus as catchy as an STD during Fresher’s Week. It’s actually very difficult to single out the strongest track of the four on offer but lead-off tune ‘Just Wait Until I Get You Home’ just about wins my vote purely because the great guitar lick at the end could bring a smile to even the most cold-hearted of Brits. The overall sound is similar to early releases from The Starting Line and Homegrown with a lyrical direction involving stories of girls, heartbreak and alienation - it is essentially what you would expect from a pop-punk record.

There are two things however that really stand out on this EP that will keep you coming back for further listens. The first is that the level of musicianship (it’s only pop-punk I hear you cry, however that’s exactly why I have noticed it) is very high - the music is tight, well structured and perfectly executed. Secondly, the use of backing vocals to compliment the main melodies throughout is fantastic and really helps lodge these songs into your head. I do feel a special mention must go out to the man behind the mixing desk, Iain Wetherell, for the excellent production values on this release as he has made this all sound very “big budget” indeed.

Overall this is a cracking release that showcases a massive amount of potential with lots of room for future development and growth. TIMH are not trying to reinvent the wheel but that is clearly not their aim with this EP - they just want to be seen as contenders. The critical might argue that they are offering nothing new to an all ready oversubscribed genre but I challenge anyone to find a UK band doing this style of music better. And with such excellent use of cowbells I might add.
