[Artist: October]
[EP: Raw]
[Label: Caravan #CVAN004]
The fourth release on the Caravan imprint sees DJ October going further down towards deeper minimal organic techno depths. ‘Raw’ is heavy and glitchy; it’s a head trip of atmospheric pans, filter effects, drifting techno synth lines and stabbing snares, though by no means as glitchy as some of the techno that is out there. It has a slight Ellen Allien vibe to it and I think it wouldn’t sound out of place on ‘Stadtkind’ though the longevity of the song puts another dimension to it. It is definitely more subtle than the ‘Invitation’ EP, October’s second release on Caravan.
Perspectiv Recordings’ label boss Ripperton joins Agnes to take apart ‘Raw’ for the B-side and add their own twist too it. Their version is not as deep in production, it’s softer and more refined, and has bags of head room for mixing. The percussion flitters around the speakers and the main synth riff is interspersed with slight vocal edits and changing drum volumes. If I had to pick one to listen to at the club and at home, I would have to say the remix will probably be best heard on a night out and October’s original to be left until you got back.
