[Single: Nurse! Nurse!]
[Label: Deep Recording]
Despite being a mere 1 minute 27 seconds long, ‘Nurse! Nurse!’, the new single from Nephu Huzzband is quite possibly the most exciting slab of new music I have listened to this year. The band comes from the increasingly prominent purveyor of new music, Nottingham. Their music is put together from a range of influences from traditional indie, post-hardcore, new wave and punk. It transcends itself into a sonic oasis of sounds which when put together really give the band an edge that sets them apart from their peers.
Their sound is simple yet highly infectious, with repeated drums, guitars, and vocals all over the place, which are all mashed up together in an experimental, yet progressive, manner. The track begins with a guitar riff which is swiftly joined by a high tempo drum beat, which leads into vocalist Tom Bentley’s rallying call of “Nurse! Nurse! Come quick!”. The band launch into their unique style of off-kilter drums and mid-song tempo changes, there’s even a small bass solo from Jamie Barrow (good going considering the short length of the track!). Before you know it the song is over and you are instantly left wondering who indeed has just blown your ears apart.
The B-side is ‘Lions, Tigers, & Bears’, which is the complete opposite in terms of tempo to ‘Nurse! Nurse!’. It’s much slower and the band has more scope for experimenting, especially with their vocals. The difference between the songs just adds to the excitement with the idea of an album of such experimentation quite mouth-watering. If this single is anything to go by then Nephu Huzzband will certainly be making some major inroads into the forefront of the UK indie scene.
