Single Review: The Maybes?

THREE[Single: Boys]
[Label: Xtra Mile Recordings]

Whenever you hear a new band from Liverpool, you always feel they are under more pressure than their piers; such is the musical history and pedigree of the city. However young upstarts The Maybes? show no signs of feeling any pressure to succeed, and with the recent release of their second single ‘Boys’, they look set to raise their already heightened profile.

Out on Xtra Mile Recordings, ‘Boys’ is a gloriously fun track that is unashamedly poppy, but still maintains a clear air of Rock and Roll. Of the band’s five members, four of them contribute to the vocals, only drummer Dominic Allen doesn’t lend his voice. It leads to a succession of choruses with everyone singing along and it creates a really fun almost party like atmosphere. Main vocalist Nick Ellis has a distinctive voice (which is reminiscent of bands from the 70s or 80s), with a good range and is pretty infectious, to be honest.

The Maybes? have three guitarists, with Allen being joined by Lee Smith and Timo Tierney. It means the band has a wide scope to employ lots of diversity within their songs. For example, there are various little solos and riffs dotted throughout the song which certainly mean it never gets boring. Drummer Allen is competent enough, though not really able to demonstrate his ability on this track, while bass guitarist Nick Otaegui is in a similar position.

The band is set to release their debut album ‘Promise’ in September. It will certainly be interesting to see how far they experiment with their sound or if they will stick to the poppy rock n’ roll of this track. Having the question mark at the end of their name certainly makes them stand out, but it is a little confusing so I wonder whether it will be dropped if the bands profile continues to rise. The band will be playing a few festivals in July, namely ZOO8 in Kent, the Monmouth Festival in Wales, and the V Festival in Stafford.
