[Single: Reasons Not To Be an Idiot]
[Label: Xtra Mile Recordings]
The second single from Frank Turner’s sophomore effort ‘Love, Ire and Song’ is a punchy and inspiring song that swings with a cocky bravado and a friendly smile. Turner has always been held in high regard for his lyrics, which have remained humorous and insightful since his Million Dead days, which now seem such a long time ago, and ‘Reasons…’ is another great example of his witty lyricism, demanding that people get out of their houses and “get up, get down and get outside.”
Despite the twee subject matter he deals with in the song, and despite his turn to folk music which is a far cry from his hardcore political days ‘Reasons…’ is still a number full of rocky passion and I reckon it could even force a smile out of Gordon Brown.
It all closes with an accomplished singalong chorus that was perfectly exploited on Turner’s recent tour of the UK, and really proves himself to be one of the most jovial songwriters that has come out of the whole singer-songwriter boom over the past few years.
My only real complaint about the single is its tendency to be a bit too sickly sweet, but as a single it will serve him well if he’s striving for a little more attention from mainstream audiences. It’s a happy-go-lucky summer snippet that will be sure to brighten up anyone’s day.
