[Single: Wake Up]
[Label: Epitaph]
‘Wake Up’ is Story Of The Year’s first single from new album ‘The Black Swan’. The song pivots around a five-chord guitar progression, while Dan Marsala’s lyrics showcase the psychosocial edge of the new album, questioning “Are we missing what it is to be alive?”
It’s one of the safer choices on the album, falling firmly into the pop-rock category. The main hook is catchy-as-hell, and the song went down a storm at the recent Astoria 2 show, prompting kids to pump their fists and scream “Wake up!” Still, there are times when the song feels a little too formulaic, after the rollercoaster of ‘In the Wake of Determination’, and some fans may feel the band are walking a more commercial path this time around.
Regardless, ‘Wake Up’ is more polished than Mr. Sheen’s furniture and stands as a showcase in how to write a catchy pop-rock tune that isn’t about girls you’re after, girls you’ve got, or girls you used to date, which is an increasingly rare gem nowadays.
