Demo Review: The Hustle

THREE[Region: Caerphilly]
[Label: Unsigned]

Hailing from Caerphilly, a small commuter town just outside Cardiff in South Wales, The Hustle are a five-piece that are increasingly getting noticed, not just on a local scale but nationally too. With a well received EP, ‘Good Intentions’, and instant playlisting on BBC Wales and XFM Wales, The Hustle are all set to take things to the next level. That level they hope will be reached with debut album ‘Things I Wish Were Mine’, which is impressively being produced by Romesh Dodangoda (Manic Street Preachers, The Blackout, Kids In Glass Houses). To help build some momentum behind the album, the band has already released the single ‘These Days’, and they are building up an extensive touring schedule primarily in Cardiff.

The track itself is pretty good, if a little “paint by numbers” if you get what I mean. However despite not being my cup of tea, it’s hard not to get sucked in by the infectious harmonies and guitar riffs. Vocals come courtesy of Lewis Fall, who is a good singer with a wide range and, if reports are true, an excellent front man. The song focuses around the chorus, with verses containing different elements such as piano added to spice things up a bit. The individual parts are not dwelt upon for too long which helps keep the song moving along at an up-tempo pace.

I think it’s the fun and energetic nature of The Hustle that will see them do well with their forthcoming album. It’s not hard to imagine how their approach is received on the live front, with their songs perfect for a fun-filled lively show. For now the band should revel in their upcoming success. Whether they have what it takes to evolve their sound into something more substantial remains to be seen.
