Demo Review: Dirt Jake Replicas

FOUR[Region: Portland, OR]
[Label: Unsigned]

Based in Portland, Oregon, Dirt Jake Replicas‘ five members were originally a collective distance of 10,188.6 miles apart (as I’m reliably informed by their little biog). This slightly pointless fact does hold some significance however, particularly when casting any eye over the wide array of artists they cite as influences. Modern-day experimentalists such as Tool and The Mars Volta, are alongside legends such as Pink Floyd, and thrown in the mix are the bands own thoughts and ideas which create a somewhat inspiring sound.

This, their debut UK release, is simply titled ‘Part I’. It begins with a slow, soft drum beat and gentle guitar rhythm beneath the twin vocalists, Dakota and Ashley. This dual delivery works really well throughout the song as both voice styles are different, not only being male and female, but also the contrast between the stronger delivery of Dakota and the softer style of Ashley. This helps to add significant layers and texture to the song, which are backed up by the musicianship of the rest of the band.

The song continues with the pace and intensity continually picking up. The band effortlessly creates a kind of mental image throughout the song. With the vocals clearly becoming more passionate, the drums more erratic, and the guitars heavier, for me it strikes up the image of a storm, slowly building up into a mighty force to be reckoned with.

It is the male/female vocal delivery combined with the tight varied guitars and drums which makes this debut single really inspiring and stand out from the pack. You could and should catch them on their forthcoming UK tour.
