[Single: The Sun Shines Down]
[Label: Illuminated Music]
The Lazarus Plot are accurately described as a “crossover band”, as far as this single goes at least. They effortlessly blend basic indie pop chords and vocals, over more offbeat rhythms and beats.
The track begins with a soft guitar intro, which is swiftly joined with acoustic guitar and a mid-tempo beat. Daniel Batchelor’s vocals soon kick in, he clearly has a good voice, extending his vocal range and singing with clear passion. Midway through the track there is a “breakdown” of sorts with a piano added to slow things down. The song finishes somewhat abruptly for my liking, or maybe this is a ploy by the band leaving you wanting more. The offbeat rhythms work well and certainly help set them apart from their peers.
All in all, it works well, and should the single get handed to the right people you’d imagine it could be commercially successful. It will be interesting to see what direction the band would take on an album, particularly with all the different styles on display in this track.
