Album Review: The Devil Wears Prada

TWOAlbum: Plagues
Label: Rise/Ferret Records

Devil Wears PradaHailing from Dayton, Ohio this lot are all about the hardcore metal onslaught utilising breakdowns to split echoing guitars and vocal whining from punching bass, snare and screamo outrage. Their debut sold by the bucket load securing them a spot on 2007’s Sounds Of The Underground tour.

Some of the tracks on sophomore effort ‘Plagues’ will bemuse and delight in equal measure and after several listens it‘s this inconsistency that frustrates. ‘Hey John, What’s Your Name Again?’ intertwines technical melodic complexity with hefty riffing and includes insane sudden dropouts to vitriolic lung-busting roars, chiming string sweeps and an odd mish-mash of white noise. ‘Reptar, King Of The Ozone’ shows off Mike Hranica’s freakish range of vocal styles and is backed-up by stunningly pretty guitar patterns but is off-set by a disappointingly formulaic drum structure.

In the end the steady battering vocal attack eventually grates and it begins to smack of screamo for screamo’s sake. This is unfortunately a step in the wrong direction in an already overloaded genre of trend hangers-on. The Devil Wears Prada are currently supporting Silverstein on their U.S. tour over the next few months and getting to one of their gigs may well be the best place to fully appreciate their true potential.
