Formed in 2002 after meeting at a Glasgow college, The February Solution five-piece began thrashing out a sound from their various influences. They emerged with a complex mixture of hardcore, metal and post-rock. After a series of gigs, UK Metal Underground were suitably impressed and in May 2006 sponsored the band’s UK tour. They followed this in February 2007 with a slot at the all-day Bloodbath Festival in Nottingham alongside the likes of Devil Sold His Soul, Shaped By Fate and Eternal Lord. Throughout this period they focused hard on self-promotion through their website, distribution at gigs and word of mouth. They proved dab-hands at that too selling out copies of their first two self-released EPs. Now with things taking off they’ve started distributing this demo which consists of four tracks, two from each of their last two EP’s.
‘Autopilot’ begins with an incomprehensible black-box recording followed by a swathe of guitar backwash, rapid-fire drums and embittered roaring. Then suddenly the sonic mayhem drops out into ethnic beats, melodic guitar and soft, unsteady vocals. ‘No Escape’ is an attack of scorched vocals and overdrive bleeding out into slowly shifting harmonic patterns. ‘Illuminati’ is the stand-out track benefitting from a more rigid structure around which those scorched vocals slot in behind bustling drums and a central two-chord sequence that bring to mind early Rival Schools. ‘Weapons’ is a collapsing mass of breaking guitars and shattering drum patterns and is a heady mix. The one piece missing from the puzzle is crisp, clean production and that will surely follow when they’re snapped up by a big label as they surely will be. Then perhaps they will have their solution.
For fans of: Between The Buried And Me, Mogwai, Rival Schools
