Album Review: Byzantine

FIVEAlbum: Oblivion Beckons
Label: Prosthetic Records

Oblivion BeckonsWhile I am writing this, I am still trying to find out whether the rumours of Byzantine’s split are true or not. If it is true, it will be a huge disappointment, as West Virginia’s Byzantine would have released another truly devastating album. It has all the hooks, the riffs, the breakdowns, the solos of both ‘The Fundamental Component’ and ‘..They Shall Take Up Serpents’, but much more. Any metal head will appreciate this album. It brilliantly travels through all dimensions of today’s metal ’scenes’: from thrash, to death, to hardcore, to technical, to progressive, to old-school. This album has it all.

It took around 4 months to record last year, and was originally scheduled to be out last September. According to frontman Chris “OJ” Ojeda, the band wanted to strip down the sound for this album, make it more aggressive, and overall make it more varied. The band are truly extraordinary musicians. Tracks on this album are brutally heavy and complex, but often take different progressive routes, and almost seems like they are just jamming.

Stand-out tracks on this album include, well, pretty much all of them. To put it simply: If you’re a fan of metal, you need this album.
